Clean Out The Closets and Sell On EBay
This does work.Millions of people buy and sell on EBay, the largest auction site every day, and there is an active market for good and gently used clothes, etc.
For example, I had a variety of fairly nice boy’s suit’s in a closet that had each been worn exactly twice. The nice thing about boy’s clothes is they tend to be in fairly standard sizes as opposed to girl’s clothes, but you can certainly do the same thing with fancy dresses that you purchased for a one time event and your child has since outgrown.
What might sell?
- Gently used clothes, especially brand names. You can also sell bulk lots of casual clothes in one size
- Gently used and clean kitchen ware. Tupperware is one example
- Working video games, DVDs, and game systems
- non-working electronics might be sold as scrap instead of being thrown out
- Bulk lots of old costume jewelry may get picked up for the “fixings” by crafts people
- You can, of course, sell real jewelry but this may take some expertise and documentation
Tip: Include the brand name, a picture, and as much data about size as you can. Make sure everything is clean and pressed so you don’t get complaints.
Look for Freelance Work Online
Large freelance sites like odesk and elance list thousands of work-at-home job opportunities for a variety of skill levels. Some jobs require technical skills, but there are also skilled writing, spreadsheet, and virtual assistant jobs.
Tip: If you go this route, make sure you go through the orientation so you find a gig that will be legitimate and satisfy you. Sadly, there are ripoffs, though the sites are policed by the management, and you need to avoid wasting time or worse.
Market Your Gigs
You can visit a site like fiverr and market small jobs you will do for $5 online. Go ahead and browse some of the offerings to see what’s popular. You actually only get $4/ gig while the site keeps $1. But the key is to break a task into small chunk so you can sell multiple gigs or add extras. Many sellers are actually getting several gigs per client.
You can also find forums – like webmaster message boards – where you can offer services. In this case you can usually get paid in cash upfront for your work.
Extra Cash In The Physical World
Have a Garage Sale
This is similar to selling on EBay, except you do it in your driveway and get cash right away. Be sure to put up plenty of signs so your neighbors can find all of the good stuff you have to sell. You might also cooperate with neighbors to have a large sale, do more promotion, and maybe even have more fun! This might be better for things – like furniture – that are hard to ship.
If you have some time, and are in good health, consider asking your neighbors if they need some odd jobs done. These could range from baby sitting and dog walking to yard work and small repairs. If you have are handy with your sewing machine, let people know you do alternations. During certain times of year, this can put you in demand, and there is almost always some demand. If you can install a ceiling fan or garbage disposal, you will also probably be popular if people know you can do this type of work.
